Novelista británica. Se graduó en la Universidad de Londres, y publicó en 1911 su primera novela,
Dolores. En la segunda,
Pastors and Masters [Pastores y amos] (1925), introduce los diálogos precisos y pulimentados que desnudan el carácter de sus personajes, hacen avanzar la trama, y que serían una característica distintiva de su obra. Las novelas de Compton-Burnett suelen girar en torno a luchas de poder dentro de una familia:
Men and Wives [Hombres y esposas] (1931) retrata a una madre tiránica,
La casa y su dueño (1935) a un padre tiránico. La escritora recibió el título honorífico de Dama del Imperio británico en 1967.
